Contemporary Garden Design in Newton Ferrers, Devon
This contemporary new build house on the crest of a steep slope in Newton Ferrers, Devon would pose a difficult problem for any garden designer.
To meet planning regulations the client's architect had proposed a zig-zag path taking up the whole length and breadth of the front garden to enable wheelchair or disabled access to the front door.
As there was very little garden space to the rear of the house this path would have taken up nearly the whole of the garden and meant that the clients would have had no vehicular access up the slope to front door.
Naila's solution was quite drastic.
She designed a conventional drive up to a large paved area at the top of the slope outside the entrance. Not only did this enable the disabled, cars and delivery vehicles to reach the front door it also allowed vehicles to execute a three-point turn.
Our clients were also provided with a spacious place in which to entertain their many friends and relations screened from the road and the houses opposite. .
Naila's proposal for a drive also freed up space at the bottom of the slope for an extra large double garage (with hardstanding for a boat) be half buried into the hillside.
The 'roof' of this garage could then become a more secluded place to sit and enjoy the river views.
