Courtyard of a Listed House in Topsham, Devon
Most of the widows in this beautiful listed house in Topsham, Devon look out on to this long paved courtyard.
As garden designers it was our brief to make it feel more like a garden.
The task was made more challenging by the fact that, except for the soil in the existing raised beds along the tall boundary wall, there was no soil under the existing paving in the courtyard.
As existing, from the entrance gate, your eye raced down the length of the space and only stopped when it hit the wall and steps at the far end.
The garden design plan Naila created slowed things down. It gave your eye features of interest to rest on and divided the area into three interlinked areas: an entrance area with its slate-on-end decorative feature; a central area with an Orb water feature; and outside the kitchen door a screened dining area. .
Now, you don't see things all at once. Instead, the eye can move more slowly from feature to feature.
